The number of linkage groups in an organism equals its haploid chromosome number. Grasshoppers use the XO sex-determination system: females are XX (diploid 24, haploid 12) and males are XO (diploid 23). By the standard convention used in these exams, both sexes are counted as having 12 linkage groups -- the unpaired X in males is still counted as its own linkage group.
