Consider the following statements : (a) Penetrating power of a particle is inversely proportional to its mass. (b) Penetrating power of α(alpha) particle is less than that of β(Beta) particle. Which one of the following gives a correct picture about the above statements ?
Penetrating power is inversely proportional to mass (heavier particles interact more and lose energy faster). Since alpha particles are much heavier than beta particles, their penetrating power is less than that of beta particles.
Consider the following statements :
Beta particles are negatively charged and are more penetrating than Alpha particles, which are positively charged.
Gamma particles are neutral and are more penetrating than Beta-particles.
In general neutral particles can be said to be having very high penetrating power.
Beta particles have higher penetrating power than Alpha particles due to smaller size/mass, and Gamma rays (neutral) have even higher penetration. Statements a and b are universally true.
