Real questions that test this
Select the appropriate option with respect to the given information. Parks A, B and C lie in a plane but do not lie on a straight line. The distance between Parks A and B is 40 km, and the distance between Parks A and C is 110 km. Quantity X = Distance between Parks B and C Quantity Y = 60 km (1) Quantity X is greater. (2) Quantity Y is greater. (3) The two quantities are equal. (4) The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.
According to the triangle inequality theorem, the third side of a triangle must be greater than the absolute difference of the other two sides and less than their sum. Here, |110 - 40| = 70 < X < 110 + 40 = 150. Since X can be anything between 70 and 150, X could be greater than 60, but we cannot uniquely determine a single value for X compared to Y = 60 without more data, wait - actually triangle inequality says X > 70, so X must be greater than Y (60). Thus Quantity X is greater.
Select the appropriate option that describes the relation between quantities A and B. Lalu and John are competing in a road race. Lalu completes 3/4th of the race in 2 hours. John completes 2/3rd of the race in 5/8th of the time which Lalu takes to complete 9/10th of the race. Quantity A Lalu's Speed Quantity B John's Speed (1) Both the quantities are equal (2) Quantity A is smaller (3) Quantity B is smaller (4) Information is insufficient for determining the relation
Lalu's speed (Quantity A) = (3/4) / 2 = 3/8. For John, time taken by Lalu for 9/10th of race is (9/10) / (3/8) = 12/5 hours. John's time is 5/8 of this = 3/4 hours. John covers 2/3 of race in 3/4 hours, so John's speed = (2/3) / (3/4) = 8/9. Comparing 3/8 and 8/9, Quantity A is smaller.
