Lalu's speed (Quantity A) = (3/4) / 2 = 3/8. For John, time taken by Lalu for 9/10th of race is (9/10) / (3/8) = 12/5 hours. John's time is 5/8 of this = 3/4 hours. John covers 2/3 of race in 3/4 hours, so John's speed = (2/3) / (3/4) = 8/9. Comparing 3/8 and 8/9, Quantity A is smaller.

Use the man-days formula (M1 * D1 * H1 / W1 = M2 * D2 * H2 / W2). Equate initial conditions with remaining work and find the total men needed, then subtract the initial 400 to find additional men.
