Statement (a) gives relative speeds, and statement (b) gives an algebraic relationship of distances covered by the runners. Both facts are needed simultaneously to determine unique numerical values for individual speeds and find the winner.

Lalu's speed (Quantity A) = (3/4) / 2 = 3/8. For John, time taken by Lalu for 9/10th of race is (9/10) / (3/8) = 12/5 hours. John's time is 5/8 of this = 3/4 hours. John covers 2/3 of race in 3/4 hours, so John's speed = (2/3) / (3/4) = 8/9. Comparing 3/8 and 8/9, Quantity A is smaller.
