The passage says that before globalization (1961 to 1991) the top 10 percent's share of national GDP fell by three percent, while 'the share of the middle forty percent and bottom fifty percent income groups had increased by 2.3 percent and one percent respectively'. So the middle 40 percent gained 2.3 percent.
